India to use IST for HR from 2027
India will require Indian Standard Time as the sole legal reference for all official, commercial and digital activities beginning in 2027, according to a notification from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
One Time Standard for the Whole Country
The new Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 will take effect about 180 days after publication in the Gazette, placing the deadline around March 2027. From that point onward, firms, government agencies and online platforms must record, display and process any time‑stamped data exclusively in IST.
Exceptions are limited to cases where foreign zones are explicitly noted, or where scientific research, navigation and astronomy need alternative references. The rule covers legal documents, employment records, contracts, banking operations, transport schedules and any digital system that relies on timestamps.

Under the framework, the CSIR‑National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will keep running India’s primary timescale, UTC (NPLI), adding five hours and thirty minutes to generate IST. Official dissemination will flow through regional reference laboratories, ISRO’s NavIC navigation system, the National Informatics Centre and other government‑approved channels.
Why Precise Timing Matters for Modern Services
Authorities argue that synchronized timing is a backbone of sectors such as finance, telecommunications, power grids and digital payments. Even a few milliseconds of drift can cause transaction errors, network glitches or data‑center outages.
The document also flags growing worries about reliance on foreign time sources like GPS, which could be vulnerable to jamming, spoofing or other cyber attacks.
To mitigate those risks, the rules require time‑synchronisation hardware and software to embed safeguards against interference. The legal metrology division will conduct periodic audits, and non‑compliant entities could face penalties under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

Employers will need to align attendance, payroll and workforce‑management systems with the authorised IST feeds. The shift is framed as both a technical upgrade and a strategic move toward greater digital resilience.
