BambooHR launches consulting arm to pair advice with software

BambooHR Expert Services expands the Utah‑based firm’s portfolio beyond software by embedding HR advisors directly in client accounts.

What the new offering includes

On Aug. 27 the company announced a team of in‑house consultants, payroll specialists and technical staff who will work inside customers’ existing setups. The bundle covers three distinct tracks: HR consulting, managed payroll and technical services. Each track is staffed by employees of the firm rather than third‑party vendors, allowing them to act inside the same system users already operate.

The HR consulting track assigns a dedicated HR consultant and an HRIS specialist. They help with employee‑relations questions, leave‑of‑absence guidance, performance reviews, compensation planning, policy drafting and organizational design. Clients may choose a long‑term partnership or a single‑session “HR Diagnostic” to pinpoint gaps.

Managed payroll places a specialist in charge of the full payroll cycle, from data prep through tax filing and employee payments. The process stays inside the client’s own account, and each run requires the client’s approval, preserving full visibility. The service currently supports employees based in the United States.

Technical services target tasks most HR teams rarely handle themselves. These include migrations from legacy platforms, account cloning after mergers, general‑ledger reporting and custom payroll reports tied to retirement plans, health‑savings accounts, flexible‑spending accounts and workers’‑compensation data.

How the model differs from traditional consulting

Across all three tracks, the firm stresses that customers retain ownership of their people, policies and decisions. No part of the employment relationship shifts to the provider, and the arrangement does not create a professional employer organization, a structure where a third party formally co‑employs a workforce.

“The hardest part of HR usually isn’t the doing, it’s the deciding. And right now, that’s harder than ever — work is changing, HR’s role is changing, the tools are changing,” said Tara Martell, chief customer officer. “Our customers don’t need another report sitting in their inbox. They need someone who knows their business and their account, who can help them think through the decision and then help them put it into action. That’s why we built our new HR services offering.”

Clients gain the advantage of having advisors who actually use the platform every day. This eliminates the ramp‑up time typical of external consultants and prevents the hand‑off of unfinished work. The firm notes that most consultants can’t touch the system they’re advising on, leaving customers with strategy but no execution.

Looking ahead, the integrated approach could encourage smaller firms to rely less on fragmented vendor stacks. If the embedded experts prove effective, organizations might favor a single‑source model for both technology and execution, reducing the need for separate project managers. That shift would depend on how quickly the service scales and whether it can keep pace with evolving labor regulations.

The consulting team averages more than ten years of HR experience, holding a mix of professional certifications and advanced degrees, in addition to deep familiarity with the platform. Their background includes hands‑on work with the very tools they now help configure for clients.

When paired with Bamboo AI—an AI suite introduced in July that can draft policies, flag payroll anomalies or generate reports within seconds—the new service aims to blend automation with human judgment. The AI can produce a draft, but deciding whether that draft fits a specific culture remains a human call.

“Most consultants can’t touch the system they’re advising on, so customers end up holding a strategy with no one to execute it,” Martell added. “Our experts are using BambooHR every day. There’s no ramp‑up, and nothing gets handed back as homework.”

The firm reports serving more than 30,000 customers in over 190 countries, with a record count exceeding three million employee profiles. Expert Services is available now, positioning the company as a “people intelligence platform” for small and mid‑sized businesses.
